Uses of Xenical
Losing weight and keeping it off is the principal focus of Xenical for people who take this drug. It slows down the enzymes in the digestive tract which break down fat molecules. This process helps to reduce the amount of fat that the body absorbs. Children as young as 12 years old can be administered Xenical. No off-label uses for Xenical have been developed as yet.
The benefits that Xenical offers are a gradual and modest weight loss when it is combined with a low-fat and a reduced-calorie diet. Xenical is a prescription drug that is used to promote weight loss.
People with a body mass index or BMI of 30 or higher, or a body mass index of 27 or higher are recommended to take Xenical if other risk factors are present, such as the following symptoms:
* High cholesterol
* Diabetes
* Hypertension or high blood pressure
People are able to lose weight and keep the weight off as they take Xenical, and those who have already lost weight do not gain it back.
The stomach and intestine have enzymes, which are called lipases, and these lipases break down fat into smaller molecules that are absorbed from the digestive tract. Therefore, Xenical works by decreasing the absorption of fat from your diet. Xenical attaches itself to lipases, slows down their activity, and helps to decrease fat absorption. Xenical does not affect protein or carbohydrates in this process.
Children and the Use of Xenical
Children age 12 and older with overweight problems can take Xenical. Before administering the drug, talk with your child’s healthcare provider about the benefits and risks that may affect your child, as Xenical can decrease the absorption of certain vitamins in your child’s diet, and this can be a cause for concern regarding your child’s growth.
Off-label Xenical refers to the use of the drug for something other than for weight loss, which your healthcare provider may recommend for you. Currently, no universally accepted off-label Xenical use exists.
