Taking Xenical While Pregnant
It is believed that Xenical is safe for pregnant women, based on results of studies on pregnant animals. In some experiments rabbits and rats were given high doses of Xenical, which did not cause any problems. Despite those results, we know that humans and animals respond differently to medications. It is advisable that you talk with your healthcare provider about the benefits and risks specific to your case that you may experience, if you are taking Xenical and you become pregnant.
Because Xenical was used to experiment on animals and it did not cause any problems, it is believed although Xenical or orlistat is a prescription weight loss aid, that it is probably safe for women to use the drug during pregnancy.
Category B Pregnancy and Xenical
In order to classify possible risks to the fetus when a particular medicine is taken during pregnancy, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration uses a category system to identify these risks. When medicines do not appear to cause harm to the fetus in animal studies, even though they have not been thoroughly studied in pregnant humans, these medicines are given a Category B classification. Medicines that appear to be safe for humans but have caused problems in animal studies are also categorized as a pregnancy Category B.
Xenical has not been studied in pregnant women; therefore it is important to understand that humans and animals usually don’t respond to medications in the same way. Studies show that pregnant rabbits and rats did not experience any problems when they were given high doses of Xenical. Sometimes Xenical can vitamin deficiencies, which can be a problem for the mother and the developing fetus; therefore, weight loss is not generally recommended for women who are pregnant.
