Information about Phentermine and Pregnancy
Phentermine is a weight loss supplement that can only be used under a doctor’s prescription. It is used to treat exogenous obesity but it is only indicated as a short term medication. This is because Phentermine has amphetamine-like side effects due to the similarities in the chemical structure of both drugs.
Prior to prescription of Phentermine, there are a lot of things that has to be considered. Some of these things would include the underlying medical condition that a patient has and medications that the patient is currently taking. Medical conditions would also include pregnancy.
When a patient is pregnant, she should inform the physician immediately before taking Phentermine. There are no further research done yet about the effects of Phentermine to pregnancy; however, it is evident that Phentermine is chemically related to amphetamines which are known to cause serious harm to pregnancy such as birth defects and or abortion.
Drugs are classified by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration based on its effect on pregnancy. The Pregnancy Category C is given to drugs that cause harm to the fetus during pregnancy, although the study has not been done to pregnant humans but rather to animals.
No further studies have been conducted to determine the effects of Phentermine on pregnancy although there are some cases wherein fetal death during birth and some lung problems have been associated with intake of Phentermine during pregnancy. Because of this, Phentermine is never recommended to use during pregnancy to avoid possible serious complications.
For a pregnant woman, taking medications of any kind should be avoided. You should also consult your physician before you drink medications because it can pose a serious threat to the health of your baby. It is also important to inform your Physician about your condition before you will be prescribed with medications that are not allowed to be taken during pregnancy. If you are very concerned with your weight during pregnancy, you might want to discuss the matters first with your physician before you resort to taking any weight loss supplement that can further cause harm to you and to your baby.
