Phentermine and Breastfeeding

Phentermine is a weight loss pill that is used to treat exogenous obesity. This drug can also be purchased upon prescription and is only used as a short term weight loss treatment. Phentermine is also not used as a standalone drug to treat obesity, but rather it is used as a drug to supplement exercise and diet.

There are no further studies done to evaluate whether Phentermine passes through the breast milk or not. So if you are a nursing mother, you should therefore inform your physician right away prior to taking Phentermine.

The drug Phentermine is not used to test on breastfeeding women to determine if it can pass through the breast milk and to determine the effects on the infant. However, experts know that Phentermine and amphetamine have similar chemical compositions and structures. Amphetamine is known to pass the breast milk. It is also proven to cause serious side effects on the infants. Therefore, because of these facts, experts do not recommend amphetamine to breastfeeding mothers.

Women who are breastfeeding should also keep in mind that their infants are getting nutrition from them through breastfeeding. Therefore, nursing mothers should increase consumption of nutritious foods instead of suppressing their appetite and aiming to lose weight. Since the breast milk is the source of nutrition of infants, mothers should adequately provide their babies with enough supply of nutrition to help in the growth and development of the baby.

Before taking Phentermine, it is therefore important that the woman should inform the physician whether she is pregnant or if she has just given birth and is breastfeeding. In general, not all women face the same situation. There are some women who need to lose weight badly because it poses a serious threat to their overall well being. These are very special cases and women should immediately seek medical attention. However, for women who just want to lose weight for vanity’s sake, it would be much better to wait for some months after the child is already not breastfeeding. It would also be much better if you talk to your physician regarding your situation so that you will both be able to come up with a solution to your problem of losing weight.
