Meridia, when taken, sends messages to certain brain chemicals which in turn gives the stomach a sense of fullness. Meridia is a prescription drug that people take to help them lose weight and keep it off. With Meridia there are possible side effects like constipation, insomnia, and headache.
Meridia Hydrochloride Monohydrate is a prescription weight-loss drug, which is manufactured by Abbott Laboratories, that has been approved to help people to lose weight and keep it off.
Meridia sends messages to the brain where it increases levels of certain brain chemicals, including norepinephrine, dopamine, and serotonin in particular sections of the brain. This medication works by making you feel full quicker than normal.
Messages travel down a nerve and causes the end of the cell to release a brain chemical. The chemical enters into the gap between the first nerve cell and the one following it. When sufficient chemical reaches the second nerve cell, it activates receptors on the cell by preventing the chemical from activating the second cell. This process is called Reuptake. Meridia does not increase the production of brain chemicals; actually it prevents the reuptake of the chemicals.
In the following process, Meridia promotes a sense of fullness, giving you a signal to stop eating: this medication blocks the reuptake of dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine, so that more of these chemicals can remain in the space between the nerve cells of the brain. In this manner, the chemicals have a better chance to activate the receptors on the next nerve cell. The opposite to this action would be to suppress the appetite or give you a signal to start eating, which is what Meridia does not do.
How Effective is Meridia?
People who only dieted to lose weight, lost only 2.9 pounds, but those who took Meridia, clinical studies indicate that it does help them to lose weight because they lost up to 18 pounds after six months of taking the medication along with dieting. Other results were seen in a one-year study, wherein higher doses produced greater weight losses.
In one clinical study, compared to only 3 percent of people who only dieted, 43 percent of people who dieted while taking Meridia, were able to keep off at least 80 percent of their original weight loss after two years. These studies also indicate that Meridia can help people who already lost weight to keep off that weight.
Other clinical research also show that in addition to dieting and due to weight loss, changes in cholesterol levels were beneficial with the help of Meridia. The levels of HDL or the good cholesterol increased and levels of triglyceride and LDL or bad cholesterol dropped.
