Insomnia and Meridia
Insomnia is a common side effect of Meridia, according to clinical research done on Meridia and insomnia. Despite this side effect, there are some things that you can do to improve your sleep habits; namely, avoid caffeine four to six hours before bedtime, avoid taking naps after 3:00 p.m., and try to keep regular sleep-wake cycles. Talk with your healthcare provider about possible treatment, if you have made these changes and you continue to have problems with insomnia.
Because of the way it works, Meridia can have a stimulating effect in some people and cause difficulty sleeping. Insomnia is a common side effect of Meridia or sibutramine hydrochloride monohydrate, occurring in about 10.7 percent of individuals, compared to only 4.5 percent of people who don’t take the medicine.
One or more of the following symptoms are characteristic of insomnia:
* Waking up too early in the morning
* Non-refreshing sleep
* Waking up often during the night and having trouble going back to sleep
* Difficulty falling asleep
Sometimes improving sleep habits can help to cure insomnia. Following are some simple hints to get better sleep.
* Avoiding large meals within two hours of bedtime.
* Sleeping in a dark, quiet room at a comfortable temperature
* Winding down 30 minutes before bedtime with a relaxing pre-sleep ritual, like soft music, reading, or a warm bath.
* Avoid taking naps after 3:00 p.m.
* Try to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day. Keeping a regular sleep-wake cycle.
* Avoiding large meals within two hours of bedtime.
* Avoiding alcohol, nicotine, and caffeine four to six hours before bedtime.
* Doing quiet activity in another room if you can’t sleep within 20 minutes, and returning to bed when you are sleepy.
In some cases, if a person does develop insomnia, it is difficult to know if these problems are due to Meridia or other factors. It can be somewhat impossible for your healthcare provider to know if you will develop insomnia while taking Meridia.
Talk with your healthcare provider if you should develop insomnia while taking Meridia. Other treatments can be recommended, including trying other weight-loss medications or adjusting the dosage of Meridia.
