Tomatoes are known to be rich in lycopene. Lycopene is an antioxidant that helps in eliminating the free radicals in the body that causes illnesses such as cancer. Because the tomato is rich in antioxidants, it has been regarded as a “superfood”.
The lycopene content in tomatoes can help in preventing cancers of the prostate, colon, lung, esophagus, skin, and breast. Tomato by-products such as ketchup, puree, or sauces can also become a good source of lycopene.
Even when you eat a raw tomato, you can still benefit from the lycopene and the other health benefits that it can provide. It can be eaten raw and be added to fresh salads or you can also eat it cooked.
When you are buying tomatoes, it would be best to choose those that have deep red shades because these ones are richer in lycopene. Apparently, lycopene is the one that is responsible for the reddish color of tomatoes.

Aside from that, it can also help in reducing the cholesterol levels. Tomatoes are also great for detoxification since it can help in eliminating the toxins in the body.
