Stress at Work can Make a Person Fat

According to a new study done in New York, stress at work is associated with a bigger waistline. Compared to employees with less stress at work, those who have more stress were fatter. These stressed workers have a body mass index of one unit higher than those relaxed workers.

BMI or body mass index is used to estimate the body fat of a person based on the height and the weight. For a person with a height of 5’10″, a BMI unit is equivalent to seven pounds.

During this time where layoffs are widespread, employees are more stressed because of the fear of being laid-off from work and because of the more responsibilities assigned to them.

While stress at work has been long associated with cardiovascular diseases, obesity, and depression, the study has once again proved that it can greatly cause a person to become obese. Hence, this is a message for the employers to take care of their employees so that their stress will be decreased.

Based from the study, the effects of stress related work can be decreased if the employees have a leisure time provided wherein they can relax and unwind from all the stress that they are encountering at work. Employers should find ways on how to help their employees eliminate stress and that would be possible by making the work environment conducive for relaxation so that they can function better at work.
