Orlistat is a popular weight loss drug in Europe. A lot of people who are trying to lose weight have been using Orlistat since it is available over the counter.

In 2009, a Europe-wide review was conducted and found a possible link between Orlistat and serious hepatic reactions. However, there is insufficient evidence to prove the link; which is why Orlistat remained popular.

However, the European Medicines Agency (EMA), has started again a review of Orlistat and medicines that contain Orlistat to determine whether there are cases of hepatic injury or failure that can impact the benefit-risk profile of Orlistat.

According to this agency, the committee is still reviewing all the relevant data on the risk of hepatotoxicity of orlistat and they will issue an opinion whether it is still safe to use or not.
