Obesity Passed on by Fathers to Their Children
Overweight fathers may pass the obesity gene to their children, according to a new study. The sperm from overweight fathers usually carries a molecular signal that causes the children to become obese.
The experiment was performed at the University of Adelaide. The research team tested two groups of mice, the obese and the physically fit.
The offspring from fat males were obese and even suffered from diabetes and infertility. The researchers tracked the trigger as part of the class of genes in the sperm called microRNAs.
According to the researchers, male obesity alters the microRNA; hence, obese fathers who slimmed down before fathering a child could avoid triggering obesity in their children.
