Older adults who are obese or overweight especially in their abdomen have a higher risk of developing colon cancer than those who are thinner.

According to studies, exercise can lower the incidence of this disease. Two percent of obese adults that were part of the study developed colon cancer. The risk is 25 percent higher in obese men.

Fat around the middle, or at the stomach area have the biggest impact for the development of colon cancer. Men with large bellies had a 63 percent greater risk for colon cancer while women had 83 percent risk for colon cancer.

Experts believed that the results of this study showed that excess body fat can greatly contribute to higher risk of colorectal cancer.

Also, studies linked diets high in fat and low in fiber, particularly fruits and vegetables, to an increased risk for developing colorectal cancer.
