Obesity and its Links to Cancer
Obesity is known to be a predisposing factor for cancer. A lot of types of cancers have been linked to obesity and scientists are looking for the exact reason why obesity is a risk factor for cancer.
Several studies have been made and numerous answers where found. However, a recent study has found out the connection between obesity and leukemia, which is also known as cancer of the blood.
According to the study, excessive fat stores or fatty tissues can provide room for cancerous cells in order to hide from the chemotherapeutic drugs given to provide treatment for cancer.
Based from the results of the study, they have observed that those who are obese and receiving chemotherapy treatment for leukemia are less likely to achieve treatment success. This is because the fat cells are providing a safe house to the cancer cells.
Actually, cancerous cells are rapid dividing cells that have capabilities of attracting healthy cells around them in order to protect them against the effects of chemotherapeutic drugs. Fat cells are easily attracted by cancer cells. Hence, obesity can further aggravate cancer rather than lengthen the life of a person.
