NEWS: Weight Loss Drug Linked to Liver Problems
According to the latest report of Food and Drug Administration (FDA), they are now reviewing the reports about a certain weight loss drug that is linked to liver problems.
The reports have shown that there have been 32 cases of serious liver injuries associated with the intake of a weight loss drug that were marketed by GlaxoSmithKline and Roche Holding.
The U.S. FDA have reported that since 1999 up to 2008, there have been reports about liver failure in patients who are taking Orlistat, which is a weight loss drug. However, this Orlistat is being sold as an over-the-counter drug called Alli, and produced by big companies that were mentioned.
FDA continues to review such reports, as they haven’t found a direct link yet to the cases of liver damage with Alli. Generally, typical side effects of Alli would include yellowish discoloration of the skin and eyes, as well as abdominal pain, and generalized body weakness.
Despite such reports of liver injuries, FDA still continues to review the cases before they make a conclusion because they still haven’t found a definite link yet. FDA said that once they’ve found enough evidence to support the claims, they will immediately inform the public about it.
