NEWS: US Plans to Pull Meridia Off the Market

Studies show that Meridia, a diet pill that was sold since 1997, can increase the risk of heart attack and stroke. The result was found out after a year of study and the U.S. health regulators are now planning to pull Meridia off the market.

Meridia is a product of the Abbott Laboratories and has been sold in the market since 1997 as a diet pill. There have been several studies made to prove the effectiveness of this drug but the most recent study shows that patients who have heart disease and taking Meridia had a more than 11% risk of cardiovascular attacks compared with 10% of those taking a placebo. Because of this study, the European health regulators have already pulled out the drug in the European market last January but the US health regulators are still mulling over it.

The FDA suggested that it could consider other options such as placing additional warning labels rather than pulling it off the market.

Apparently, the drug Meridia has been receiving a lot of criticisms from public safety advocates for many years because of its adverse effects. These public safety advocates have been calling the FDA to withdraw the pill from the market.
