New Obesity Scale Proposed by Scientists

BMI or body mass index has been the standard scale for obesity; however, scientists are now proposing a new obesity scale that will help in determining whether the person is too fat without the need to step on the weighing scale.

This new measure is called Body Adiposity Index or BAI. Body Adiposity Index relies on the height and hip measurements. It is meant to provide a more reliable alternative to the usual Body Mass Index or BMI which is a ratio of the height and the weight.

According to scientists, BMI has long been used as a measure for body fats but it has its own flaws. Although there are other ways to determine obesity, BMI has been widely used both by physicians and researchers.

On the other hand, BAI is a complex ratio of the circumference of the hip to the height. This can be calculated by physicians or nurses using a calculator.

Because BAI or Body Adiposity Index still needs fine tuning, it still needs to be tested on different subjects. However, scientists feel that this measure is very promising especially in remote areas where there is limited access to weighing scales.
