Lack of Sleep may be linked to Obesity
Apparently, the rate of obesity continues to rise each year and this is very alarming especially in the health care industry because it is well known that obesity can lead to serious diseases.
Experts are continuously looking for answers about the possible causes of obesity in order to prevent the increasing rate each year. They have conducted numerous studies and found out that one factor which can cause obesity is lack of sleep.
Actually, a lot of adults and even children do not get enough sleep. A recent report have shown that the decline in number of hours of sleep of individuals can lead to obesity because overeating is promoted. Aside from that researchers have also found out that more than overeating, hormones, mental functioning, and behavior that contributes to obesity are also promoted.
Results of the study show that adults who are sleeping less than six hours per day weigh more than those who are getting enough sleep everyday. Aside from that, this is not only true to adults because children who also lack sleep are weighing more than children who have enough sleep.
Based from these studies, two hormones related to appetite are affected when people do not get enough sleep. Ghrelin is being released, which is a hormone that stimulates appetite, whenever a person gets less amount of sleep.
Aside from that, another hormone is affected, which is leptin. Leptin is responsible for telling the body that we already have enough food and that we need to stop eating already. When a person lacks sleep, the hormone leptin is also increased.
Hormones are not only the ones affected by lack of sleep, but also our mental capabilities. When we lack sleep, we are poor in concentration and we don’ t have enough strength to handle stress. And in order to handle stress, some people tend to overeat.
As you can see, there are a lot of effects brought about by lack of sleep. Time is very important especially now that our life becomes more fast paced. However, despite that, it is still necessary to prioritize our health and get adequate sleep at night.
