Fractures Related to Obesity in Older Women

Older women are prone to fractures especially on the hip or wrist; however, older women who are also obese are less likely to develop fractures in these areas because they are prone to develop fractures in the upper arm, ankle, and lower leg.

This is based on a research conducted by European experts. The research compared fractures among obese and non-obese women in their post menopausal years.

According to the study, 23 percent of women who are obese have experienced fractures at age 45 and above. Obese women have a higher risk for developing fractures in the ankle, lower leg, and upper arm but they have a lower risk for developing fractures in the wrist and hips compared to women who are not obese.

The main point of the research is to determine whether obesity can increase the risk for fracture or not. The researchers found out that the obese women in their post-menopausal years have the same tendencies to have fracture to those who are not obese, only in different areas of the body.
