Comfort Food and Obesity

Whenever one feels sad or depressed for whatever reason, comfort foods would often provide a relief to that sadness. People tend to resort to eating their comfort foods whenever they feel sad because comfort foods make them feel satisfied. However, this would often lead to emotional eating. It becomes a habit to eat whenever one is feeling down and sometimes, the amount of food eaten is more than one should eat, often leading to obesity.

Usually, overeating is due to emotional eating. A person who feels sad, depressed or even anxious would resort to eating the foods that they want, and this is what we refer as comfort foods. It is not bad to eat whenever you are sad but eating too much and out of control is bad for your health.

According to recent studies, experts have found out that eating comfort food can actually cause a never-ending cycle of depression and emotional eating. Experts suggested that eating comfort food can increase a person’s risk for developing depression, causing them to be more depressed and eat more foods. Eventually, this will result to obesity.

The researchers are still looking for the specific explanation for these findings and they are suggesting that more studies should be made regarding this matter.

Eating to make you feel better is not bad and it is really quite comforting; however, it is still important to control yourself and prevent overeating especially if the foods that you are going to eat are not healthy and purely junk.
