Avoiding Hypoglycemia during Exercise
Exercise is an excellent method of maintaining your blood sugar levels. This is good for individuals with diabetes; however, one must beware of hypoglycemia. Hypoglycemia is when the blood glucose levels are too low.
When you exercise, your body generally needs more energy than usual. This extra energy comes from blood sugar or also known as glucose. If you are exercising, you are speeding up your metabolism; hence, you may use up all the glucose in your bloodstream faster than the usual. When you use up a lot of glucose, it can cause hypoglycemia.
To avoid this from happening, you need to be more observant of your body. It would be best to check your blood glucose before exercise. If you are in the normal range, it would be best to eat a snack first. As soon as you feel the symptoms of low blood sugar, you should stop exercising and check your glucose levels and treat it accordingly.
